Classroom Teachers:
The total number of teachers reported here is based on the teachers the state
has defined as "classroom" teachers. There are other adults who work in school buildings,
many of whom work with children, who are not counted here.
National Board Certification:
National Board Certification is offered by the National Board for Professional
Teaching Standards. National Board Certification is not required for teaching
in the state of North Carolina, but it is a voluntary way for teachers to seek
additional professional credentials that recognize their advanced teaching skills
and techniques. Candidates for National Board Certification gather a portfolio of
their work (including student work samples, lesson plans, and videotapes of their
teaching) and complete a detailed analysis of the work they are submitting.
In addition, all candidates spend a full day taking examinations that focus on
their content knowledge in their teaching field. To learn more
about the National Board Certification process, visit the
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards website .
Teachers with Advanced Degrees:
This indicator is not related to Highly Qualified teacher data.
The percentage in this table only includes teacher advanced degrees that have been
entered into state records. The state collects information about education-related
advanced degrees, but teachers with advanced degrees outside the field of education
may not be included here. State records only contain information about teacher
non-education advanced degrees when an individual teacher, school, or school district
notifies the NC Department of Public Instruction that the teacher holds the degree.
